Republic of Ireland
The Football Association of Ireland recently announced that the League of Ireland will be known as the Airtricity League for the next three seasons.
The 2010 League of Ireland constitution has undergone some last-minute changes after the Independent Club Licensing Committee unanimously decided to refuse the Premier Division Licence application of Cork City. An updated League of Ireland 2010 fixture list was released on Thursday 25th February with Bray Wanderers replacing Cork City in the Premier Division, and Cork City Foras Co-Op replacing Bray in the First Division.
So, Bray, who finished bottom last season and originally relegated, regain their Premier Division at the expense of Cork. Derry City have been demoted to Division One and two clubs have been promoted. UCD were the 2009 Division One Champions and Sporting Fingal came through the promotion/relegation play-offs to gain a Premier Division place for the first time in their history.
In Division One, newly-formed Cork City Foras Co-Op, playing home games at Turners Cross, have been granted a licence. Kildare County left senior football at the end of last season and have been replaced by Galway-based Salthill Devon, promoted from the ‘A’ Championship. Salthill will play home games at their Drom ground. Mervue United will again play home games at Galway United’s Terryland Park.
Five clubs have been awarded licences for the 2010 third-tier ‘A’ Championship. They are Castlebar Celtic, Cobh Ramblers, FC Carlow, Tralee Dynamos and Tullamore. All Premier Divison clubs were field a second side in the ‘A’ Championship and it has been reported that First Division Limerick FC will enter a second side as well.
